Some people love freckles and others dream of finding a way to completely eradicate them from the skin. They’re considered harmless and rarely develop into skin cancer, but some women may be overly conscious of their small tan or light-brown marks. While it’s known that the sun will make freckles appear darker and increase in number, solutions for making them vanish aren’t as well-known. One option worth considering is IPL therapy treatment.

What is IPL?
IPL stands for intense pulsed light, and it’s a popular treatment that’s been used to address a range of conditions, including age spots, spider veins and enlarged pores. It’s typically used for people with sun damage, reduced firmness, or broken capillaries.
How the Process Works
IPL uses short bursts of a high-intensity, polychromatic light to reach below the surface of the skin and address damage. It’s believed to make skin more elastic and may even increase collagen levels. It takes several treatments to start seeing improvement. As a general rule, people can expect to undergo three to six treatments with about a month in between for the skin to rest and recover. The treatment option has been around since the 1990s and it’s considered to be very safe.
IPL and Lasers
The two treatments are not quite the same. While they both use light energy that’s converted to heat energy, IPL systems use more wavelengths in every pulse of light than lasers. Filters are used to refine the energy and give it better direction.
Although the treatments will address problems below the skin’s surface, IPL treatments do not harm the top layers of skin. This allows people to have the treatments done on their lunch break or at another convenient time and then head right back to work. Without any recovery time required, it’s easy to make this investment in yourself.
Freckles are essentially a type of sun damage, so IPL treatment can be highly effective for this type of skin discoloration. Light is used to target the melanin in the skin, effectively heating it up, destroying the excess levels, and allowing the skin color to return to normal.
A Closer Look at the Procedure
Receiving this type of treatment isn’t quite as simple as just making the appointment. People are encouraged to prepare for the procedure by avoiding sun exposure in the weeks before and after the treatment. A cold gel is used on the treatment area for comfort, and the glass surface of the IPL will rest on this gel. You can expect the treatment to last roughly 20 minutes with no downtime required afterward.
There may be some mild pain during the treatment, but topical anesthetic may provide some relief. The skin may be pink and sore immediately afterward, and it may feel similar to a sunburn. These side effects are normal and are considered to be very mild. They will fade over time.
