It’s not too early to start thinking about those New Year’s resolutions, especially those having to do with your health and appearance. If you are concerned about the aging process where wrinkled and discolored skin covers your face, consider a non-surgical, non-abrasive treatment technique known as a chemical peel.
As a gentle exfoliation procedure, chemical peels not only remove dead and damaged skin but also promote healthier skin growth. We recommend this type of treatment for our clients who wish to minimize the appearance of small frown lines, surface scarring, or age spot pigmentation problems.
How a Chemical Peel Works
Although the name sounds a bit frightening, a chemical peel is a gentle exfoliation procedure. When you get a mild sunburn, the damaged epidermis eventually dries up and flakes away.
A chemical peel works much the same way but without the pain and tissue damage.
Special acid solutions are used for this cosmetic procedure. For upper-level skin treatment, alpha-hydroxy acid is most commonly used.
Glycolic acid is used when the treated area includes the medium-depth skin layers. The acid doesn’t burn the skin, but it does damage the targeted layers so that the skin begins to blister.
After a while, the damaged skin layer falls away, and new, healthier skin replaces it.

What Patients Can Expect
Before we perform this type of treatment, we schedule a consultation with the client and map out regions of the face or other areas of the body where wrinkling, discolored skin, and scarring is occurring. We then suggest the appropriate level of treatment.
It is an outpatient procedure that takes about 30 minutes. The face is washed thoroughly, and a series of pads soaked in a solution are placed directly on the skin surface.
After the treatment, some mild swelling may occur. We recommend that our clients wear sunscreen. After two or three days, the outer layer of skin has become blistered and dry. It flakes off, and the body responds by building up newer, healthier skin tissue.
Advantages of Chemical Peel Treatment
Since no surgery is performed and no injections are made, the skin is not subjected to puncture wounds. Recovery time is rather quick, with most individuals noticing the peel effect within three or four days. Any redness soon disappears, and makeup can be used almost immediately.
