Sun spots and freckles can detract from your appearance. As we age, sun exposure along with genetic factors can result in an increasing number of small skin discolorations, particularly on the face. A localized buildup of melanin combined with increasing density of the subdermal tissues in the affected area can cause capillaries to become larger. This leads to sun spots and dark patches. If you are concerned about the uneven tone of your facial skin, IPL therapy may be the solution. This procedure uses pulsed light energy to constrict capillaries and stimulate collagen production.
Light Energy Photorejuvenation
There are several different types of light therapy, including fractional laser treatments, photodynamic therapy and IPL therapy. The latter is an abbreviation for intense pulsed light therapy. It works by stimulating the lower dermal layers and causing the body to respond as if to a slight injury. The epidermis is not affected by the pulsed light beams because they are broad-spectrum frequencies that pass right through the upper skin layers and target the layers where the discolorations exist.
This is a very simple procedure that is performed by our specialist in the comfort of our office in South Kingstown. The individual undergoing this treatment can resume normal activities at once. We usually schedule a series of sessions, spaced about a week apart.
Who is a Candidate?
You may be an ideal candidate for IPL therapy if you have a light or medium skin tone. Sun spots are like ordinary freckles in that the darkness is caused by a concentration of melanin and oversized capillaries. The treatment can also help diminish signs of rosacea and shallow-depth injury scars. Individuals with very dark skin can also respond well to IPL.
The instrument used is a special device that has controls for setting the frequency range of the light energy. The range is custom-set to penetrate effectively through the epidermis. A cooling gel is applied to the area to be treated.
A lamp is placed next to the skin and flashed for a few milliseconds. The concentrated light energy heats up the lower dermal layers and causes the capillaries to constrict. After several flashes, the lamp instrument is moved to the next treatable area and the process is repeated.
Between treatment sessions, the body will send nutrients to the affected areas. The tissue that grows to replace older, damaged tissue will be more even-toned. This treatment also stimulates collagen production, so any wrinkles or fine lines will smooth out to some degree.
