Regular chemical peel treatments can be a great way to rejuvenate the skin by exfoliating and improving skin texture. Chemical peels can also minimize acne scars and dark spots from aging and sun damage.
How Do Chemical Peels Work?
For a superficial chemical peel, a safe chemical mixture or mask is applied to the skin where it works to remove the top layer of skin and to stimulate new skin growth. This exfoliation also stimulates the growth of collagen and lightens darker melanin areas that are often referred to as age spots.
Superficial peels can be used for almost all skin types and have a fairly fast recovery time. It’s an excellent choice for rejuvenating the outer layers of skin. Deeper scars and wrinkles may need to be addressed with deeper chemical peels or in combination with other skin treatments.
What Happens During Chemical Peel Treatments?
After a consultation and before treatment, some patients may need to stop taking certain medications. Some may also be asked to apply a skin solution for several weeks before the chemical peel is given in order to improve the effectiveness of the treatment.
In preparation for the chemical peel, a cleansing solution is usually applied first. Then a chemical solution is applied to the skin and left on for a period of time. This is then washed from the skin and a neutralizer and a moisturizer are applied to the skin. Various chemical peels may have additional steps or require more time.
Following treatment, patients may be asked to use specific cleansing agents and moisturizers to promote healing. It will be important to avoid removing flaky skin or to scratch the skin. To maintain the rejuvenating effects of the chemical peel, it is important to use daily sunscreens. Some retinol serums may be recommended to use weekly after healing has occurred.
How Long Will the Effects Last?
If the patient responds well to treatment and appreciates the appearance of smoother, brighter and younger-looking skin, then a regular skin rejuvenation treatment is recommended. Treatment can be given every month, but may only need to be given every two or three months, depending on each patient’s needs.
