We all get older, and as we do, so does our skin. Often, years of exposure to the sun, and the aging process, can lead to age spots, sun spots and an increase in freckles. But there are methods to reduce these conditions and restore your skin to a more natural and youthful appearance.
At Rhode Island’s SeaMist MedSpa in South Kingstown, our trained and professional staff offers Intense Pulsed Light Therapy to combat these and other skin conditions.
The treatment, known as IPL, is specially designed to treat aging skin, remove sun damage and decrease redness from rosacea. The IPL therapy also can reduce broken capillaries and target unsightly brown spots, age spots and freckles.
This treatment also can help with acne, increased pore size and fine lines. During IPL therapy, skin actually changes from the inside out. Areas we can treat include the face, forearms, hands and shoulders.
We pledge that your skin will appear more evenly toned with a healthier glow!
What is IPL Therapy?
Intense Pulsed Light treatments use the photorejuvenation process and represent the latest in skin care technology. The technique is a non-invasive way to treat skin damage.
IPL treatments help combat the effects of photoaging and sun damage that often come as we get older. The risk of complications from IPL treatments is low and no recovery time is needed.
IPL therapy is considered an elite technique for photorejuvenation. The treatment is approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration, and its state-of-the-art technology offers dramatic improvements to various troublesome skin conditions.
These conditions include:
- Age spots
- Sun-induced freckles
- Unattractive veins
- Acne scars
- Unwanted hair
Many experts agree that photofacial IPL treatments are the best option to remove age spots, damaged capillaries, sun spots and other skin problems.
Areas of the body that can benefit from IPL therapy include:
- Face and neck
- Legs and arms
- Just about anywhere on the body where skin problems occur
How does IPL work?
We’ve all wanted to get rid of stubborn sun damage from our cheeks, chest and neck. Many of us have tried to address the problems with a variety of products, but none have worked – that’s when it’s time to consider IPL treatments.
These treatments feature light wavelengths that target melanin in pigmented lesions — better known as sun spots — and hemoglobin in vascular lesions, which are broken capillaries.
When IPL is used to treat sun spots, light is absorbed and damages cells that cause unsightly spots to appear. Melanin cells and tiny blood vessels take in heat from the light pulses, causing them to be absorbed a few weeks following treatment.
Some patients may notice improvement to their skin after only a session or two, but others may require three to five treatments over a period of two to three weeks for the best results.
How many treatments you will need depends on the part of the body being treated and how extensive your sun damage is.
IPL treatments boast minimal recovery time.
You can use makeup right away and return to work and your normal routine immediately. Your skin may be a little red for several hours after treatment, but it’s usually not noticeable to others.
Your skin may feel warm, but not to the point of discomfort. In some cases, spots and freckles may appear to become a bit darker after treatment. This is a normal reaction – and lets you know melanin cells have been properly treated.
Treated spots should start to fade after a few days, and will continue to do so over the following two to three weeks.
Treatment itself is almost completely pain-free. You may feel tiny flashes of light and a slight pinching sensation on your skin during treatment. But most patients report that treatments are very comfortable. If your skin is extra-sensitive, we can offer a numbing cream that should make treatments pain-free.
After treatment, it’s important to apply sunscreen to protect yourself from future sun spots appearing after you are exposed to sunlight.
Don’t let age spots, sun spots and too many freckles continue to trouble you.
