Rosacea is a condition that causes reddening of the skin across the center of the face. Red pimple-like bumps often emerge in the reddened areas. Over time, the condition tends to progressively get worse, and can lead to thickening of the facial skin and a bulbous nose.
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy uses intense light to treat skin conditions. Unlike a laser, IPL uses a range of different wavelengths of light, allowing it to target a wider range of pigments and skin conditions. The wavelengths being used can be precisely calibrated to treat each individual patient’s condition, taking into account the patient’s natural skin color to target the lesions more effectively.
How it Works
IPL therapy can be used to treat many conditions. It eliminates blemishes and discolorations and restores a smooth, even skin tone. It is a highly effective treatment for the excessive redness, flushing, and visible capillaries that characterize rosacea. One study reported that IPL therapy dramatically reduced the skin levels of various growth factors that cause blood vessels to grow, and it also reduced the surface levels of inflammatory factors. These results suggest that IPL works to address the root cause(s) of rosacea.
What to Expect
Our medical team will provide the patient with protective eyewear prior to treatment. A cooling gel is then applied to the areas of the face to be treated. The handpiece of the IPL device will be smoothly and slowly passed over the skin, delivering the light therapy. Each session takes 30 to 40 minutes. Most patients will need six to eight treatments at 4-week intervals to achieve the desired result. We’ll work with you to determine the most effective treatment schedule for your specific needs.
Most patients report that IPL can be unpleasant. Some people describe the sensation as being similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. If necessary, a local anesthetic gel can be applied before treatment to reduce the discomfort. There may be an unpleasant burning smell as well, which is caused by the small hairs on the face being burned off.
No recovery is needed; patients can immediately return to their regular activities. Some patients will experience reddening of the skin in the treated area, similar in appearance to a sunburn. This intense reddening will go away after a few hours. Most patients report their rosacea appears slightly worse for around two days after treatment, after which it will return to its pre-treatment appearance.
In the hands of unskilled technicians, IPL can occasionally cause burns or scarring. However, when performed by a skilled, qualified treatment provider, IPL is quite safe. There are generally no risks or side effects. Our staff is highly trained and skilled and you can feel confident that you are in good hands.
