Invasive cosmetic surgeries such as facelifts are not the ideal treatment option for every patient. Many people will benefit from injectables such as dermal fillers and muscle relaxants, but it can be difficult to decide which product will help you achieve your cosmetic goals.
Where Did These Wrinkles Come From?
Wrinkles will become apparent around your eyes, nose, forehead, and chin for quite a few different reasons. Some patients will develop wrinkles around their forehead and eyes due to clenched muscles just under their skin. Others will begin to notice these issues due to a loss of volume in their face.
Everything from sun damage to your genetics will affect how quickly you develop these cosmetic issues. Patients can take some steps to protect their skin throughout their lifetime, but practically everyone will deal with fine lines and wrinkles at some point.
Injectable Dermal Fillers
Much like their name implies, dermal fillers are used to “fill” up the skin and add volume. Many patients will lose volume in their skin as they grow older, and this can result in sunken cheeks, wrinkles, and other cosmetic problems.
Dermal fillers contain either an acid or protein that is injected directly into the skin. These fillers can be injected almost anywhere on the face including the cheeks, near the eyes, and the lips. When applied by an experienced injection specialist, the results often last for six months or longer.
BOTOX® can be used to treat many of the same issues as dermal fillers, but these shots are quite different. Instead of adding volume to one’s skin, BOTOX® will relax the muscles.
Over the years, we subconsciously contract our facial muscles, and this can produce wrinkles. BOTOX® is injected so that they will become relaxed. Much like fillers, the results of BOTOX® injections will often last for six months or longer. There is also no downtime for this procedure, and most patients can return to their regular daily activities immediately after their appointment.
Choosing the Right Injectable
All patients will need to speak with an experienced cosmetic surgeon to determine which of these treatment options will best suit their needs. No matter what type of injection you end up choosing, the preparations are quite similar. Patients will receive an initial screening to determine if they are a good candidate for injectables.
For BOTOX® injections, it often takes a week or longer before the full effects can be seen. Injectable fillers, on the other hand, produce immediate results. Some of the most common side effects include redness and minor irritation around the injection sites.
