The aging process often leaves many people looking older than they feel on the inside, which can lead to feelings of diminished self-esteem and even depression. One common complaint is lost volume in the skin that can lead to a tired, haggard appearance. Losing volume in the lips is another condition that makes people look older and can result in wrinkles and creases around the mouth.
Fortunately, there are treatments available that can safely and effectively treat these areas of concern. Much of the volume that has been lost in the lips can be restored by treating with Restylane®.
What is Restylane®?
Restylane® is a transparent gel that can be injected into the lips to restore lost volume, smoothing away wrinkles and folds. It contains a substance called hyaluronic acid, which is its active ingredient.
Restylane® contains a mixture of stabilized hyaluronic acid and sodium chloride. It is different from similar products in that its hyaluronic acid is not taken from animals. This prevents allergic reaction or transmission of animal diseases.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally produced by the human body. One of its properties is an attraction to water molecules. In fact, hyaluronic acid can attract and hold many times its own weight in water.
This water has a plumping effect upon the skin, adding additional volume and making individual skin cells more resilient to the damaging effects of the environment and the aging process.
As we age, however, our bodies begin producing progressively less hyaluronic acid. This greatly contributes to lost volume in the skin and lips. The good news is that this process can be largely reversed by adding additional hyaluronic acid where it is needed.
Restylane® contains enough hyaluronic acid to make an immediate, significant difference in the volume of the lips.
How does Restylane® work?
Restylane® works by enhancing volume to the lips temporarily. You can expect the results to last about six months. It uses your own body’s moisture to maintain its shape. The special property of hyaluronic acid to bind to water molecules is what offers results that are long-lasting.
How long does Restylane® treatment take?
Restylane® treatment is safe, effective, and very quick. The treatment time will vary, based upon how much of a correction is required.
How long with the results last?
The Restylane® will degrade naturally over time and be metabolized by your body. How long your results will last depends upon factors like your age, lifestyle, and your skin’s structure.
The duration can be extended with follow-up treatments. People normally elect to have a follow-up treatment performed within six months of lip enhancement.
